Usually when I make a Flannel Baby Receiving Blanket, it’s because I’m putting together a baby shower gift or just a gift for a new Mom.
When I was a new Mom, someone gave a set of these to us and they were the single most useful thing we’d ever gotten. I always try to share the love when someone has a baby and make a set for them.
Part of the fun of giving gifts, of course, is making the gift look attractive, and my favorite way to present the baby blankets is to roll them up into little bundles so they can be tucked into a gift basket, placed in a gift bag or made into a baby blanket cake.
I’m sure there’s 1,001 ways to do this, but here’s the way I do mine:
Step 1: Gather Supplies
This one’s pretty simple! All you need is:

the baby blanket
-
a flat surface
-
the extra strip of flannel you cut when making the blanket OR a ribbon or piece of yarn
Step 2: Fold Blanket in Half
Place the blanket face down on the surface in front of you. If the flannel has a directional print (i.e. only one way is “up” then make sure that the print is right side up when it is laying face down in front of you. Take the top edge and fold it down to meet the bottom edge. The front of the blanket will now be on the outside, and if you have a directional print, as you look at it, it will seem upside down. This is exactly how you want it!
Step 3: Fold Blanket in Half Again
Take the long folded edge and fold it down again to meet the bottom edges. If you peek under the corner you should see more of the front of the flannel as shown above. If you have a directional print, it will still seem to be upside down.
Step 4: Fold One End to the Middle
Take the right side of the blanket and fold it into the middle so that the edge is right at the halfway point of the blanket. You can find the center by temporarily folding the blanket in half then unfolding it to make the fold above. If you’re confused, see the next step, it might help clear things up.
Step 5: Fold the Other End to the Middle
Take the left edge of the blanket and fold it into the middle so the edge is at the halfway point. Now you should have a little rectangle where the two sides of the blanket meet in the middle as shown above. If you have a directional print, it should now appear to be right side up.
Step 6: Roll From the Side
Tightly roll the folded blanket from one side to the other. The flange edge should still be at the bottom. If you have a directional print, it should still be right side up.
Step 7: Tie to Secure
Wrap your tie around the bundle and tie to keep it from unrolling. I use an extra strip of flannel from when I made the baby blanket, but you can also use yarn, a ribbon, or a strip of scrap fabric.
Step 8: Tie a Bow
To make it pretty, tie a bow!
Step 9: Trim Bow Ends
Trim the tails off to your desired length and….
You Are Finished!
Congratulations!
You have finished rolling your Flannel Baby Receiving Blanket into a little bundle!
Now it can be tucked into a gift bag or basket, or paired with several others to make a gift set or baby blanket cake.
