I am proud to announce that after months of hand-tying and hand binding this little quilt, it is finally finished!! I must say this quilt has been quite the learning experience, but I am also really pleased with how it’s turned out. The color palette was inspired by an antique Ocean Waves block that I bought on eBay, and after much trial, tribulation and straight-up math, I think I captured the feel of the original piece.
The other big lesson was how long it takes to hand-tie a quilt. I had been thinking it would be easier and faster than machine quilting but oh, no!! It is also because I chose to tie every inch and a half (on each intersection), but it really was surprising how long it took to complete that part.
I love how it turned out, though. I think the typing really makes the quilt, and the black ties coordinate with the black backing. It’s a pretty bold choice for me, the black backing, but I really think it works with the quilt. The amount of black and dark blue in the original antique piece really surprised me. It was 50% black and dark blue!! I would have never guessed. It sure doesn’t seem dark or drab in its finished state either, but like the original, this quilt is 50% black and dark blue. Who’d’ve thunk it?
All in all I had a great time making this quilt and love how it turned out. It took a long time to tie it, but I spent that time watching Gilmore Girls for the first time, so it ended up being a lovely experience. Now I need to make another!
