Vintage-Inspired Master Bedroom Digital Makeover

When I told you about my thrifted mantel clock makeover, I mentioned that I had found several things while thrifting all summer, and this is one of them. I went to Goodwill a few weeks ago because I was looking for vintage sheets, and while I was there I got sucked into the entire bedding section!

I found a green throw for Rocket Boy (his favorite color) and a purple throw for Baby Girl (her favorite color), and I found this beautiful, soft, cozy, vintage plaid blanket for Mr. Magpie. I absolutely love the colors, and I love that it’s a little more masculine for him, instead of the florals upon florals that I prefer.

I have to admit, I had an ulterior motive. Mr. Magpie has an afghan that a relative made for him, and… I’m sorry, but it’s awful! It’s acrylic yarn, asymmetrical, black, red and a blueish gray and it’s… well. I won’t say anything more about it. It’s special to him and I wouldn’t ask him to give it up. But I don’t necessarily want to live with it in my bedroom either, YKWIM? So his blanket will go in his study, and this one can live here.

The best part is that he actually really loves it. He says it’s better than his old blanket — it’s a full-size blanket, has some weight to it, and is suuuuper soft. When he’s not using it, I fold it up and put it on the wing-back chair so it’s always available.

Of course, we’re not really working on this room right now, and so there’s still a ton to do. Slipcover the chair, paint the nightstands, paint the walls…. add lamps for goodness sake.

I’d also love a vintage-look quilt on the bed, and some great vintage quilt pillows. Maybe the lampshade could be bright pink to freshen things up?

And you know, at some point Mr. Magpie and I would like to add two new windows, one on either side of the bed. It’s sooo dark in the bedroom, and I think it would be pretty and also let in a ton of light.

Oooh, pretty!

Okay, maybe a bit too girly for Mr. Magpie. But we can adjust as we go in real life and make sure it’s a room that he’s comfortable in, too. Fortunately he’s not too concerned with the bedroom being a wee bit on the feminine side. His attitude is that if it makes me feel romantic and sweet, that’s good for him, so he’s okay with it.

But for now it’s nice just having a few things in here that are starting to speak to that color palette that makes me so happy. You may remember that I brought a bouquet of cabbage roses home from a friend last year, and I realized that these colors are my most favorite of all. So I’ve been trying to follow that lead when I do find things for my bedroom from time to time. Since we’re not really working on it, exactly.

For now, I’m just happy to find something that makes us both happy AND is so functional. Win!

How about you? Have you found anything good lately?

Love, Angela

  3. Oh…How I love plaid and that blanket is gorgeous…not to mention so warm and cozy looking. Isn’t thrifting the best fun? I found some wonderful treasures yesterday. I bought the most wonderful big old chicken cookie jar and a collection of slittle country chickens the other day. I will have to do a post in the near future of some of my favorite finds.I love your blog and your name “Cottage Magpie” is just adorable.Thank you for stopping by my blog and leaving such a thoughtful comment.Blessings, my friend,Carolynn

    1. Hi Carolynn! Thank you so much! I do love thrifting. I have to be careful not to go too often, because I find too many things to bring home! Your chicken jar sounds so cute! I look forward to seeing them on your blog. Best! ~Angela~

  4. Hi Angela,I love that you feel free to mix patterns, styles, and colors, and that they totally work in this room. I also want to tell you I really enjoy reading, and seeing pics of ALL of your works in progress, so please keep sharing. Thank you for inspiring me.

    1. Thank you, Jillian! It’s so sweet to hear that I’m inspiring others — it’s hard for me to believe that my random mess here is inspiring, so it’s touching that you think so. I actually kind of did this little digital experiment off the cuff, and it didn’t turn out like I had expected, and I like it so much better! Now I’m going to work on making it real. Thanks for stopping by! ~Angela~

  5. Love that soft plaid blanket – something about soft and plaid just makes me think fall. We are slowly working on our master bedroom too, so I’m collecting things. Just last night while my husband and I were out on a once every 6 month (it seems like that long) date night, our restaurant wasn’t open yet so we bopped into the old town area, stopped at an antique store and I picked up a gorgeous pair of aqua milk glass candlesticks. I don’t know quite how I’m going to use them but I know they will be beautiful in our room. Keep plugging along Angela! I think your room is lovely now, but I love the direction you’re going in.

    1. OH my goodness. Aqua? Milk glass? Candlesticks?????? Be still my heart. I am so sorry, but I seriously covet those. So pretty! I don’t even have to see them to know, haha! Thank you so much for stopping by — I’m chugging away here, little by little! ๐Ÿ™‚ ~Angela~

Hi Angela Your room looks so cozy and comfy, a place that’s good for you and Mr. magpie to snuggle in together. That’s important. Your blanket looks like some of the big heavy Mexican blankets we have and they are super for keeping you warm. We lived in MT with 35below and 45below (during the day even) temps. They have weight also which I love on our bed. We now have 3 quilts on bed with another standing by in case I get cold. We live in western CO now and it’s not nearly as cold as Mt was or even KY which we moved to after MT. Before MT we lived in San Diego area.I also loved your Fall/Halloween mantel. We don’t have a mantel either so hubs made me a shutter shelf which I’m having such a good time decorating when the urge strikes. We live in a single wide mfg. home (16×80). I’ve been waiting for over 6 yrs. to get the walls painted. Good thing I didn’t hold my breath. We’re on a real strict non budget as we live on SS, such fun especially when we have 5 weeks between paydays. Ah such fun to be had.Have a great week end. I’m pretty new to your blog but enjoying what I see so far..

    1. Hi JaneEllen! Thanks so much for visiting! I totally hear you on the “non budget” — that’s where we are at, too! Just a few dollars here and there, but mostly just have to make do with what I have on hand already. I hate to say it, but I’m thankful I’ve held on to so many things now! Mr. Magpie is from Wyoming, so he totally understands about cold temps — we live in the Pacific Northwest now, so we mostly just have rain! ๐Ÿ™‚ Thanks again for stopping by! ~Angela~
